The Invention of Borges
Documentary, Argentina, France (2019 – 79 min)
Written and Directed by
Nicolas Azalbert
Francisco Acevedo is in fact Hayrabet Alacahan, an Armenian cinephile, owner of a film society and critic. He created the “Cineteca Vida” Foundation, and, having gone blind, is compiling an encyclopedia of every film ever made. Emma, a young actress, accompanies him everywhere. The Borgesian connections don’t end there: Acevedo was friends with Borges, and Azalbert evokes him constantly in title sequences from films based on or related to his work (including the one we’re watching). He even shows us a special made by the atc network shortly after his death. This is a film about films packed full of films – apart from the aforementioned title sequences, Azalbert includes many classic footage from movies by Hitchcock, Fritz Lang and Hugo del Carril, among others.
